WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
Cashmere should ideally be washed by hand unless your washing machine has a specific cashmere cycle that operates with lukewarm water (below 28 °C) and very gentle agitation.
To prevent felting, please follow these guidelines:
- Use minimal detergent and make sure it is approved for wool care.
- Maintain a consistent water temperature throughout both washing and rinsing (not exceeding 28 °C).
- After rinsing, place the garment in a mesh laundry bag and spin briefly at low speed.
- Lay the item flat on a towel to dry, reshaping it gently.
Cashmere garments often don’t require frequent washing. Simply airing them out in humid outdoor conditions can refresh them effectively.
COLOUR TRANFER AND BLEEDING
While working with dark-coloured yarns, you may notice some dye rubbing off onto your fingers. This is a common occurrence and doesn’t necessarily indicate that the colour will bleed onto other fabrics. This effect is usually due to a combination of body heat and excess dye on the yarn. Over time and with washing, this surplus dye will be removed. That said, we recommend avoiding wearing dark knitwear over white garments, as small cashmere fibres may cling to lighter fabrics and make them appear stained. For the first wash, it can be helpful to add a small amount of vinegar to the rinsing water to help set the colour.
CONDITIONED YARN WEIGHT
Cardiff Cashmere yarn is sold based on its conditioned weight.
This means the yarn’s weight is determined after drying and then adjusting with a standard moisture regain to reflect typical storage conditions. Cashmere, in particular, naturally absorbs a considerable amount of moisture from the environment without feeling wet, so standardized weight certification is crucial.
When yarn moves from our warehouse to a warmer retail environment, a slight decrease in weight is normal. A weight reduction of up to 10% is considered acceptable. However, the yarn’s meterage remains consistent with what is indicated on the label — and this is the key factor to ensure you have enough for your knitting project.
STORING YARN AND KNITTED ITEMS
Store both yarn and finished pieces in a sealed plastic bag or a tightly woven cotton pouch.
We advise against using insecticides, as they may cause allergic reactions and only offer temporary protection (about three months), with the treatment being washed out after the first cleaning.
